Tuberculosis (TB) Treatment in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that most often affects the lungs and spreads through the air when someone with lung TB coughs. It is curable with a full course of medicines, usually for at least 6 months. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, chest physicians diagnose and treat TB, including drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB and XDR-TB), in line with India’s National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP).

Symptoms of TB

  • A cough lasting 2 weeks or more
  • Fever, especially in the evening
  • Night sweats
  • Weight loss and loss of appetite
  • Coughing up blood
  • Chest pain or breathlessness

TB can also affect other parts of the body, such as lymph glands, bones, the spine, the brain or the lining of the lungs. Symptoms then depend on the part affected.

 H2   How TB is diagnosed

  • Sputum tests, including rapid molecular tests that can also detect resistance to key TB medicines [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: in-house or through NTEP/partner lab]
  • Chest X-ray
  • Bronchoscopy to collect samples when sputum tests are negative or not possible
  • Other tests, such as biopsies, for TB outside the lungs

 H2   Treatment for TB

Drug-sensitive TB is treated with a combination of medicines taken daily, usually for at least 6 months. It is essential to take every dose and complete the full course, even when you start feeling better, because stopping early can make TB come back in a drug-resistant form.

Drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB and XDR-TB)

In drug-resistant TB, the bacteria do not respond to one or more of the main TB medicines. Treatment uses different medicines, often for a longer time, with close monitoring for side effects. Drug-resistant TB care follows national programme guidelines, and our chest physicians coordinate with NTEP services for testing, medicines and follow-up.

Side effects to report straight away

  • Yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, or severe nausea and vomiting
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Blurred vision or changes in colour vision
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Hearing problems or ringing in the ears (with some drug-resistant TB medicines)

Protecting your family

  • Cover your mouth when coughing and use a mask in the first weeks of treatment, as advised
  • Keep windows open and rooms well ventilated
  • Family members, especially children, should be checked. Some may be offered preventive treatment
  • People with lung TB usually become much less infectious after a few weeks of correct treatment

Government support for TB patients

TB is a notifiable disease in India, so every diagnosed patient is registered with the national programme. Notified patients are eligible for Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana, a direct benefit transfer for nutrition support during treatment. The national TB helpline is 1800-11-6666.
