Colonoscopy in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

A colonoscopy is a test that uses a thin, flexible camera passed through the back passage to examine the whole large bowel (colon and rectum). Polyps can be removed and biopsies taken during the same test. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, colonoscopy is performed by gastroenterologists, usually with sedation, and takes about 20 to 45 minutes.

Why is a colonoscopy done?

  • Bleeding from the back passage or blood in the stool
  • A lasting change in bowel habit, such as diarrhoea or constipation
  • Tummy pain or bloating that is not explained
  • Anaemia or unexplained weight loss
  • To look for and remove polyps, which can turn into cancer over time
  • A family history of bowel cancer
  • To monitor inflammatory bowel disease

Bowel preparation

A clear view needs a completely empty bowel, so preparation is the most important part of a good colonoscopy.

  • Follow a light, low-fibre diet for a day or two before, as advised
  • Drink the bowel preparation solution exactly as instructed. It will cause frequent loose motions, so stay near a toilet
  • Keep drinking clear fluids to avoid dehydration
  • Tell your doctor about diabetes medicines, iron tablets and blood thinners, as some may need adjusting

What happens during the test

  1. You lie on your left side and a sedative is given through a vein.
  2. The colonoscope is passed gently through the back passage and around the bowel.
  3. Air or carbon dioxide opens the bowel for a clear view, which can cause cramping.
  4. Polyps are removed and biopsies taken if needed, usually painlessly.

Sigmoidoscopy

A flexible sigmoidoscopy examines only the rectum and lower part of the bowel. It is shorter, often needs only an enema for preparation, and may be enough for bleeding from the back passage in younger people. Your gastroenterologist will advise which test you need.

After a colonoscopy

  • Bloating and wind are common for a few hours
  • You can usually eat normally afterwards
  • Do not drive for the rest of the day after sedation
  • Polyp and biopsy results usually take a few days

Risks of colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is safe for most people. Rare risks include bleeding after polyp removal, a tear in the bowel wall (perforation) and a reaction to sedation. Seek urgent help if you have severe tummy pain, fever or heavy bleeding after the test.

Usually 20 to 45 minutes, plus preparation and recovery time.

Why is bowel preparation so important?

The bowel must be completely empty for the doctor to see the lining clearly and not miss polyps.

Can colonoscopy detect bowel cancer?

Yes. It is the main test to find bowel cancer and remove polyps before they turn into cancer.
