Upper GI Endoscopy in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

An upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy) is a test in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through the mouth to look at the food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, endoscopy is performed by gastroenterologists, with throat spray or sedation for comfort.

Why is an endoscopy done?

  • Acidity, heartburn or indigestion that does not settle with treatment
  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Vomiting blood or passing black stools
  • Unexplained weight loss or anaemia
  • Suspected ulcer or infection with H. pylori
  • To check for varices (swollen veins) in people with liver disease

What can be done during an endoscopy?

  • Biopsy: tiny painless tissue samples for testing
  • pylori testing, a common cause of ulcers
  • Treatment of bleeding from ulcers [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: therapeutic endoscopy for bleeding done in-house, and whether emergency endoscopy is available 24×7]
  • Banding of varices in liver disease [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: VERIFY]
  • Removal of small polyps or swallowed objects [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: VERIFY]

Advanced imaging: chromoendoscopy and magnification endoscopy

Some changes in the lining of the gut are too subtle to see on a standard endoscopy. Chromoendoscopy uses special dyes or digital light filters to highlight abnormal areas. Magnification endoscopy gives a close-up view of the lining. Together they help doctors spot early changes, such as Barrett’s oesophagus or early cancer, and target biopsies precisely.  H2   How to prepare

  • Do not eat for about 6 to 8 hours before the test. Small sips of water may be allowed up to 2 hours before. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: hospital fasting instructions]
  • Tell your doctor about blood thinners, diabetes medicines and allergies. Do not stop medicines unless told to.
  • If you are having sedation, bring someone to take you home.

What happens during the test

  1. Your throat is numbed with a spray, and a sedative may be given.
  2. You lie on your left side with a mouth guard in place.
  3. The endoscope is passed gently through the mouth. It does not affect your breathing.
  4. Air is used to open the stomach for a clear view, which may cause burping.

After the endoscopy

  • Do not eat or drink until the throat numbness wears off, usually within an hour
  • A mild sore throat or bloating is common and settles quickly
  • If you had sedation, do not drive or sign important documents for the rest of the day
  • Biopsy results usually take a few days [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: report time]

Risks of endoscopy

Endoscopy is a common and safe test. Rare risks include bleeding after a biopsy or treatment, a tear in the gut lining (perforation), a reaction to sedation, and breathing in stomach contents. Seek help urgently if you have severe pain, fever, vomiting blood or black stools after the test.
