Tubal Ligation (Family Planning Operation) in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

Tubal ligation, also called tubectomy or female sterilisation, is a permanent family planning operation in which the fallopian tubes are blocked, cut or sealed so that eggs and sperm cannot meet. It is more than 99% effective. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, gynaecologists offer counselling first, then perform the procedure by laparoscopy or during a caesarean section.

Who is tubal ligation for?

Tubal ligation suits women who are sure they do not want any more children, or any children in future. Because it is meant to be permanent, you should only choose it after careful thought. Long-acting reversible methods are just as effective and can be stopped. See our family planning options.

Counselling and consent

Before the operation, your gynaecologist will explain the procedure, alternatives, risks and the chance of regret, and answer your questions. You will sign a consent form. You may wish to discuss the decision with your partner.

How tubal ligation is done

  • Laparoscopic tubal ligation: through one or two small cuts near the belly button, using a camera. Most women go home the same day or the next day.
  • During a caesarean section: the tubes can be tied during the operation, with no extra cut.
  • After a normal delivery: a small cut below the belly button can be used within a few days of delivery. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: post-partum tubal ligation offered]

Recovery

  • Mild tummy pain, shoulder-tip pain after laparoscopy and tiredness for a few days
  • Most women return to normal activities within a week
  • Use contraception until your next period if advised by your doctor
  • Your periods and hormones do not change because of the operation

Risks and limitations

  • Surgical risks such as bleeding, infection and, rarely, injury to nearby organs
  • About 1 in 200 women become pregnant over their lifetime after sterilisation. If this happens, there is a higher chance the pregnancy is outside the womb (ectopic), which needs urgent care
  • It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections
  • Reversal is difficult, not always successful and not guaranteed

After tubal ligation, seek urgent care if you have a missed period with tummy pain or vaginal bleeding, as this can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy. Come to the 24/7 Emergency department or call +91 85912 35064.

Frequently asked questions

Is tubal ligation permanent?

Yes. It is meant to be permanent. Reversal surgery is difficult and does not always work.

Will tubal ligation affect my periods?

No. It does not change your hormones, so your periods continue as before.

Can tubal ligation be done during a C-section?

Yes. If planned and consented in advance, the tubes can be tied during the caesarean.

How long does it take to recover from laparoscopic tubal ligation?

Most women return to normal activities within about a week.

Can I get pregnant after tubal ligation?

It is rare, about 1 in 200 over a lifetime. If it happens, seek care quickly because the risk of ectopic pregnancy is higher.
