Dialysis Centre in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

Dialysis is a treatment that does the work of failed kidneys, removing waste and extra fluid from the blood. Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, provides haemodialysis under DM nephrologists, places dialysis catheters, cares for AV fistulas, and supports patients on peritoneal dialysis, including CCPD. Who needs dialysis?

Dialysis is needed when kidneys lose most of their function (end-stage kidney disease), or temporarily in some cases of acute kidney injury, dangerous potassium levels, severe fluid overload or poisoning. Your nephrologist decides the right time to start.

Haemodialysis

In haemodialysis, blood flows from your body through a filter (dialyser) in a machine and back again. Most patients need about 3 sessions a week, each lasting around 4 hours.

  • Access: through an AV fistula in the arm (preferred for long-term dialysis), or a dialysis catheter in a large vein
  • During the session: blood pressure and wellbeing are monitored by trained staff
  • Infection control: patients with hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV are dialysed on dedicated machines [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: dedicated machines or area]

Dialysis catheter placement

When dialysis is needed urgently or a fistula is not ready, a soft tube (catheter) is placed in a large vein in the neck or groin under local anaesthetic. Longer-term tunnelled catheters are more comfortable and have lower infection risk. Keep the catheter dry and clean, and report fever or redness immediately.

Peritoneal dialysis and CCPD

Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of your tummy as a natural filter. A soft tube is placed in the tummy, and dialysis fluid is exchanged at home, either by hand several times a day (CAPD) or by a machine overnight (CCPD). It allows more freedom from hospital visits. Our nephrologists train and follow up patients. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: PD catheter insertion done at Apex and home training support]

Living well on dialysis

  • Follow fluid and salt limits to avoid breathlessness and swelling
  • Watch potassium and phosphorus in your diet, as advised by your team
  • Take medicines for blood pressure, anaemia and bones as prescribed
  • Never miss a dialysis session
  • Protect your fistula arm: no blood pressure checks, injections or tight bangles on it

Seek emergency care for very little or no urine, severe breathlessness or swelling, chest pain, confusion, severe weakness or palpitations in someone with kidney disease or on dialysis, or a dialysis catheter with fever. Call +91 85912 35064 or 108, or come to the 24/7 Emergency department.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a dialysis session take?

A haemodialysis session usually takes about 4 hours, typically 3 times a week.

Is dialysis painful?

Dialysis itself is not painful. Some discomfort can occur when needles are placed in a fistula, and some people feel tired afterwards.

Can I do dialysis at home?

Peritoneal dialysis, including machine-based CCPD, is done at home after training. Haemodialysis is done in the hospital unit.

Can dialysis be stopped once started?

In acute kidney injury, kidney function sometimes recovers and dialysis can stop. In end-stage kidney disease, dialysis is usually lifelong unless a transplant is done.

What is the cost of dialysis at Apex Hospital?
