Circumcision in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

Circumcision is a minor operation to remove the foreskin, the skin covering the tip of the penis. It is most often done for medical reasons such as a tight foreskin (phimosis) or repeated infections, and sometimes for religious or personal reasons. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, circumcision is performed by our surgeon, usually as a day procedure.

Medical reasons for circumcision

  • Phimosis: a foreskin too tight to pull back, causing pain or problems passing urine
  • Paraphimosis: a foreskin stuck behind the head of the penis. This is an emergency.
  • Balanitis: repeated infection or inflammation of the head of the penis and foreskin
  • Scarring or other foreskin conditions

Paraphimosis is an emergency. If the foreskin is pulled back and cannot be returned, and the tip of the penis becomes swollen and painful, come to the 24/7 Emergency department or call +91 85912 35064.

Alternatives

Some foreskin problems improve with creams or treatment of infection. Your surgeon will discuss whether circumcision is needed or whether other treatment can be tried first.

The procedure

  1. A private consultation and examination.
  2. The operation is done under local or general anaesthesia and usually takes about 30 minutes.
  3. The foreskin is removed and the skin edges are closed with dissolvable stitches.
  4. Most patients go home the same day.

Recovery

  • Swelling and discomfort for a few days, eased with pain relief
  • Keep the area clean and dry as instructed
  • Wear loose, supportive underwear
  • Avoid sexual activity for about 4 to 6 weeks, or as advised
  • Stitches usually dissolve within 2 to 4 weeks

Risks

Circumcision is a common procedure with a low risk of complications. Possible risks include bleeding, infection, swelling and changes in sensation. Seek help if bleeding does not stop, swelling increases or you cannot pass urine.
