Gallbladder Stone Surgery in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

Gallbladder stone surgery (cholecystectomy) removes the gallbladder when gallstones cause pain or complications. It is usually done by laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, and most patients go home within 1 to 2 days. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, our surgeon performs open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and gastroenterologists offer ERCP if stones have moved into the bile duct.

What are gallstones?

Gallstones are hard deposits that form in the gallbladder, a small pouch under the liver that stores bile. Many people have gallstones without symptoms. When a stone blocks the gallbladder outlet, it causes pain, and it can lead to infection or other problems.

Symptoms of gallstones

  • Pain in the upper right or upper middle tummy, often after fatty meals, lasting from minutes to hours
  • Pain spreading to the right shoulder or back
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever, yellow eyes or dark urine if there is infection or a blocked bile duct

Go to emergency now for severe or worsening tummy pain, vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, black tarry stools, heavy bleeding from the back passage, a hard swollen tummy, or high fever with yellow eyes. Call +91 85912 35064 or 108, or come to the 24/7 Emergency department.

When is surgery recommended?

  • Repeated attacks of gallstone pain
  • Inflamed gallbladder (cholecystitis)
  • Gallstone pancreatitis
  • Stones in the bile duct, after clearing them with ERCP

Gallstones that cause no symptoms usually do not need surgery. Your surgeon will advise you based on your ultrasound and symptoms.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

  1. The operation is done under general anaesthesia.
  2. The surgeon makes 3 or 4 small cuts and inserts a camera.
  3. The gallbladder is freed from the liver and removed through one of the cuts.
  4. The operation usually takes about 45 to 90 minutes.

Sometimes the surgeon needs to change to open surgery for safety, for example if there is severe inflammation.

Recovery and diet after surgery

  • Most patients go home within 1 to 2 days
  • Light activities usually resume in about 1 to 2 weeks
  • You can live normally without a gallbladder. Bile flows directly from the liver into the gut
  • Some people have looser stools after fatty meals for a while. A balanced, lower-fat diet helps

Risks

Possible risks include bleeding, infection, bile leak, and rarely injury to the bile duct, which may need further treatment. Some people have ongoing digestive symptoms after surgery.
