ECG test being recorded on a patient at Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane

ECG Test in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

An ECG (electrocardiogram) is a quick, painless test that records the electrical activity of the heart through small sticky patches placed on the chest, arms and legs. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes and can show heart rhythm problems and signs of a heart attack. ECGs are done at Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, and urgent ECGs are available 24/7 through the emergency department.

What is an ECG?

Every heartbeat is triggered by an electrical signal. An ECG picks up these signals and prints them as a wave pattern. A standard ECG uses 10 electrodes to record 12 views of the heart, which is why it is also called a 12-lead ECG.

Why is an ECG done?

  • Chest pain, breathlessness or palpitations
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • High blood pressure or diabetes check-ups
  • Before surgery or as part of a health check
  • To monitor known heart disease or the effect of medicines

What can an ECG show?

  • A heart attack that is happening now or has happened before
  • Reduced blood supply to the heart muscle
  • Irregular rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation
  • A heart rate that is too fast or too slow
  • Thickening of the heart muscle, often due to high blood pressure
  • Effects of some medicines and blood salt levels

How is an ECG done?

  1. You lie on a couch and uncover your chest, wrists and ankles.
  2. Small sticky electrodes are placed on the skin. Some chest hair may need to be clipped.
  3. You lie still and breathe normally for a minute while the recording is taken.
  4. The electrodes are removed and you can leave.

No preparation is needed. Avoid applying body lotion on the chest on the day of the test so the patches stick well.

ECG results

The tracing is ready immediately. It is read by a doctor, and your cardiologist or physician will explain what it means for you. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: whether a written cardiologist report is issued the same day]

Limitations of an ECG

An ECG is a snapshot of a few seconds. A normal ECG does not rule out heart disease, especially if symptoms come and go. Your doctor may recommend a Holter monitor to record the heart over 24 to 48 hours, a TMT stress test to check the heart during exercise, or a 2D echo to look at the heart’s structure.

ECG vs 2D echo: what's the difference?

An ECG records the heart’s electrical signals. A 2D echo is an ultrasound picture of the heart’s muscle and valves. An ECG checks rhythm and signs of a heart attack. A 2D echo checks how well the heart pumps and whether the valves work properly.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an ECG take?

The recording takes about a minute. The whole test, including setting up, usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Is an ECG painful?

No. It only records signals from your heart. Removing the sticky patches may feel like removing a plaster.

Can an ECG detect a heart attack?

Yes. An ECG can show a heart attack that is happening now or one that happened in the past. Blood tests are also used to confirm it.

Can I get an ECG at night at Apex Hospital?

Yes. If you have chest pain or other urgent symptoms, an ECG can be done at any hour through the 24/7 emergency department.

Does a normal ECG mean my heart is healthy?

Not always. An ECG is a short snapshot. If symptoms continue, your doctor may advise a Holter monitor, TMT or 2D echo.
