2D Echo Test in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

A 2D echo (two-dimensional echocardiogram) is an ultrasound scan of the heart. It shows moving pictures of the heart’s chambers and valves, so doctors can see how well the heart pumps. The test is painless, uses no radiation and usually takes 20 to 45 minutes. It is available at Apex Multispeciality Hospital in Kopar Khairane and is reported by our cardiology team.

What is a 2D echo test?

A 2D echo uses high-frequency sound waves, like a pregnancy ultrasound, to create live images of your heart. A small probe is moved over your chest, and the pictures appear on a screen as your heart beats.

It is different from an ECG. An ECG records the heart’s electrical activity. A 2D echo shows the heart’s structure and movement. Doctors often ask for both.

Why might a doctor recommend a 2D echo?

  • Breathlessness, chest pain or swelling of the legs
  • A heart murmur heard with a stethoscope
  • An abnormal ECG
  • After a heart attack, to check for damage
  • Long-standing high blood pressure or diabetes
  • To follow up known heart valve disease or heart failure
  • Before some surgeries or cancer treatments

What can a 2D echo show?

  • How strongly the heart pumps, often reported as the ejection fraction (EF)
  • Whether the heart valves open and close properly, or leak
  • Weak areas of heart muscle after a heart attack
  • Thickened or enlarged heart walls
  • Fluid around the heart
  • Some holes or defects present from birth
  • Signs of raised pressure in the lungs

How is a 2D echo done?

  1. You change into a gown open at the front and lie on your left side.
  2. Small sticky patches are placed on your chest to track your heart rate.
  3. Gel is applied, and the technician or doctor moves the probe over your chest.
  4. You may be asked to breathe slowly or hold your breath for a few seconds.
  5. The gel is wiped off and you can go home straight away.

How to prepare

  • No fasting is usually needed for a standard 2D echo. Take your regular medicines unless told otherwise.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to undress above the waist.
  • Bring earlier echo reports, ECGs and your doctor’s prescription.

When will I get my report?

In most cases, 2D Echo reports are available on the same day, especially when the test is performed during the first half of the day. Report timing may vary depending on the test schedule and clinical requirements, so patients can confirm the expected turnaround time with the hospital at the time of booking.

Is a 2D echo safe? Risks and limitations

A standard 2D echo is very safe. There is no radiation and no needle. The gel can feel cold, and the probe pressure may be slightly uncomfortable.

The test has limits. Image quality can be reduced by body size, lung disease or chest shape. A normal echo does not rule out blocked heart arteries, because the heart may look normal at rest. If this is a concern, your doctor may suggest a TMT stress test or other tests.

Stress echo

A stress echo combines an echo with exercise or a medicine that makes the heart work harder, to see how it performs under strain. Read about options on our TMT stress test page.

Who performs and reports your 2D echo?

Your 2D echo is supported by Apex Hospital’s cardiology team, including:

  • Dhammdeep Humane, MD, DM (Cardiology)
  • Rakesh Tirmale, MD, DM (Cardiology)

Tests are carried out by trained cardiac technicians and reported by the cardiology team. Meet the team on our doctors page who perform these tests.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a 2D echo take?

Most 2D echo tests take 20 to 45 minutes, including preparation.

Do I need to fast before a 2D echo?

No. Fasting is not usually needed for a standard 2D echo. You can eat, drink and take your usual medicines unless told otherwise.

Is a 2D echo painful?

No. The probe is moved over your chest with gel. You may feel slight pressure but no pain, and there is no radiation.

What is the cost of a 2D echo at Apex Hospital?

Please call +91 85912 35064 for the current price.

What is the difference between ECG and 2D echo?

An ECG records the heart’s electrical signals. A 2D echo is an ultrasound that shows the heart’s structure, valves and pumping. They answer different questions and are often done together.

Can a 2D echo detect blocked arteries?

Not directly. A 2D echo can show heart muscle damaged by a past blockage, but a normal resting echo does not rule out narrowed arteries. A stress test or angiography may be needed.

What does ejection fraction mean in a 2D echo report?

Ejection fraction (EF) is the percentage of blood the main pumping chamber pushes out with each beat. Your cardiologist will explain what your number means.
