Brain Surgery (Craniotomy & Craniectomy) in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

A craniotomy is an operation in which a piece of the skull is temporarily removed to reach the brain, then replaced at the end. A craniectomy is similar, but the bone piece is not replaced straight away, to give a swollen brain room. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, neurosurgeons perform these operations for brain bleeding, injury, swelling and tumours, with ICU care afterwards.

Why is brain surgery done?

  • To remove a blood clot after brain haemorrhage or head injury
  • To relieve pressure from brain swelling (decompressive craniectomy)
  • To remove or biopsy a brain tumour
  • To treat some brain infections, such as abscesses

What happens during the operation

  1. The operation is done under general anaesthesia.
  2. The hair is clipped in the area and the scalp is opened.
  3. A section of skull bone is carefully removed.
  4. The neurosurgeon treats the problem, for example removing a clot or tumour.
  5. In a craniotomy, the bone is fixed back. In a craniectomy, it is stored or replaced later in a second operation (cranioplasty).

After surgery

  • Close monitoring in the ICU, sometimes with breathing support at first
  • Medicines for pain, swelling and prevention of fits
  • Gradual return to eating, sitting and walking
  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation as needed
  • Stitches or staples removed after about 10 to 14 days

Risks

Risks depend on the reason for surgery and include bleeding, infection, fits, brain swelling, stroke, and new weakness, speech or memory problems. After craniectomy, patients must protect the area until the bone is replaced. Your neurosurgeon will explain the expected benefits and risks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between craniotomy and craniectomy?

In a craniotomy the skull bone is put back at the end of surgery. In a craniectomy it is left out for a time to allow the swollen brain room, and replaced later.

How long does brain surgery take?

It depends on the reason, usually a few hours.

How long is the hospital stay after brain surgery?

Often one to two weeks, including ICU time, but it varies with the condition.

When is the skull bone replaced after craniectomy?

Usually after several weeks to months, once the swelling has settled, in an operation called cranioplasty.
