Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

A pulmonary function test (PFT), also called a lung function test, measures how much air your lungs can hold and how fast you can breathe out. The most common PFT is spirometry, where you blow hard into a mouthpiece. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, PFTs help chest physicians diagnose and monitor asthma, COPD and other causes of breathlessness.

Why is a PFT done?

  • To find the cause of breathlessness, wheeze or long-standing cough
  • To diagnose asthma or COPD and check how severe it is
  • To see whether inhalers are working
  • To check lung fitness before some surgeries
  • To monitor lung disease over time

How to prepare

  • Ask whether to stop your inhalers before the test, and for how long [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: hospital instructions on withholding inhalers]
  • Do not smoke for at least a few hours before the test
  • Avoid a heavy meal and heavy exercise just before
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

What happens during the test

  1. You sit upright and a soft clip is placed on your nose.
  2. You take a deep breath in, seal your lips around a mouthpiece and blow out as hard and fast as you can.
  3. This is repeated a few times to get consistent readings.
  4. You may be given an inhaler and asked to repeat the test after 15 to 20 minutes, to see if your breathing improves (reversibility test).

The test usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. You may feel a little tired or light-headed from blowing hard.

What the results show

  • Obstructive pattern: air cannot be breathed out quickly, as in asthma and COPD
  • Restrictive pattern: the lungs cannot hold enough air, as in some lung scarring conditions and chest wall problems
  • Reversibility: a good improvement after an inhaler suggests asthma

Your chest physician will explain the results alongside your symptoms and other tests.

Who should not have a PFT

The test may be postponed if you have recently had a heart attack, eye, chest or tummy surgery, a collapsed lung, or you are coughing up blood. Tell the team if any of these apply.
