Colorectal (Bowel) Cancer Surgery in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon (large bowel) or rectum. It often starts from a polyp that grows slowly over years. Surgery to remove the affected part of the bowel is the main treatment for most colorectal cancers. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, surgical oncologists perform colorectal cancer surgery, with colonoscopy for diagnosis by our gastroenterologists.

Symptoms

  • Blood in the stool or bleeding from the back passage
  • A change in bowel habit lasting more than 3 weeks
  • Tummy pain, bloating or a lump
  • Unexplained weight loss or tiredness from anaemia
  • A feeling of not emptying the bowel completely

Diagnosis and staging

Colonoscopy with biopsy confirms the diagnosis. CT scans, and MRI for rectal cancer, show how far the cancer has spread. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: CT and MRI access]

Surgery

  • Colectomy: removing the part of the colon with the cancer and nearby lymph nodes, then joining the bowel
  • Rectal cancer surgery: removing the rectum with care to preserve bowel and nerve function where possible
  • Stoma (colostomy or ileostomy): sometimes needed, temporary or permanent, to allow the bowel to heal or when joining is not possible

Surgery may be open or laparoscopic depending on the cancer and your health. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: laparoscopic colorectal surgery performed]

Other treatment

Some patients need chemotherapy after surgery, and some rectal cancers need radiotherapy before surgery. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: chemotherapy and radiotherapy arrangements]

Recovery

Hospital stay is usually about 5 to 10 days. Early walking, gradual return to eating and support with any stoma help recovery. Regular follow-up with scans and colonoscopy checks for recurrence.

Risks

Risks include bleeding, infection, a leak where the bowel is joined, blood clots and temporary changes in bowel habit. Your surgeon will explain your personal risks.

No. Piles and fissures are common causes, but bleeding should always be checked, especially over age 40.
