Pancreatitis Treatment in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, a gland behind the stomach that helps digest food and control blood sugar. Acute pancreatitis causes sudden, severe upper tummy pain and needs hospital care. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, gastroenterologists and surgeons treat pancreatitis with ICU support for severe cases, ERCP and gallbladder surgery when gallstones are the cause.

Acute and chronic pancreatitis

Acute pancreatitis comes on suddenly. Most people recover within a week, but some develop serious complications. Chronic pancreatitis is long-lasting inflammation that slowly damages the pancreas, causing repeated pain, poor digestion and sometimes diabetes.

Common causes

  • Gallstones blocking the duct shared by the bile duct and pancreas
  • Alcohol use
  • Very high blood triglycerides (a type of fat)
  • Some medicines, injury, or after ERCP
  • Sometimes no cause is found

Symptoms

  • Severe pain in the upper middle tummy, often spreading to the back
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever and a fast heartbeat
  • In chronic pancreatitis: repeated pain, oily or foul-smelling stools, and weight loss

Go to emergency now for severe or worsening tummy pain, vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, black tarry stools, heavy bleeding from the back passage, a hard swollen tummy, or high fever with yellow eyes. Call +91 85912 35064 or 108, or come to the 24/7 Emergency department.

How pancreatitis is diagnosed

Diagnosis is based on symptoms, blood tests (such as lipase or amylase) and imaging such as ultrasound, which also checks for gallstones. A CT scan may be needed to assess severity. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: CT access]

Treatment of acute pancreatitis

  • Admission for fluids through a drip, pain relief and close monitoring
  • Early feeding when possible, which helps recovery
  • ICU care in our ICU for severe cases with organ problems
  • ERCP if a stone is blocking the bile duct or there is infection
  • Gallbladder removal, usually during the same admission or soon after, for gallstone pancreatitis
  • Stopping alcohol completely if it was the cause

Treatment of chronic pancreatitis

Care focuses on pain control, stopping alcohol and smoking, enzyme supplements with meals to help digestion, diet advice and managing diabetes if it develops.

Complications and surgery

Severe pancreatitis can lead to fluid collections, infected tissue, or problems with the lungs and kidneys. Some complications need drainage or surgery. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: pancreatic surgery (pancreatectomy) is on hold in the taxonomy. Confirm scope before adding any surgical treatment claims]
