Kidney Biopsy in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

A kidney biopsy removes a tiny sample of kidney tissue with a thin needle so it can be examined under a microscope. It helps find the exact cause of kidney disease and guide treatment. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, kidney biopsy is performed by nephrologists through the skin (percutaneously), usually with ultrasound guidance. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: ultrasound guidance and who performs it]

Why is a kidney biopsy done?

  • Protein in the urine, especially in large amounts (nephrotic syndrome)
  • Blood in the urine with other signs of kidney disease
  • Kidney function falling without a clear cause
  • Suspected kidney involvement in conditions such as lupus

How to prepare

  • Blood tests to check clotting and kidney function
  • Blood thinners, including aspirin, usually need to be stopped for some days. Follow your doctor’s exact advice.
  • Blood pressure should be well controlled
  • You may be asked not to eat for a few hours before

The procedure

  1. You lie on your stomach.
  2. The skin is cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic.
  3. Using ultrasound, the doctor guides a thin needle into the kidney while you hold your breath briefly.
  4. One to three small samples are taken. The procedure takes about 30 minutes.

After the biopsy

  • You lie flat and are monitored for several hours, often overnight
  • It is common to see a little blood in the urine for a day
  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for about 1 to 2 weeks
  • Results usually take a few days to a week

Risks

The main risk is bleeding, which is usually minor and settles on its own. Rarely, bleeding is serious and needs a blood transfusion or a procedure to stop it. Pain at the site and infection are uncommon.
