Apex Multispeciality Hospital : Kopar Khairane
Dialysis is a treatment that does the work of failed kidneys, removing waste and extra fluid from the blood. Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, provides haemodialysis under DM nephrologists, places dialysis catheters, cares for AV fistulas, and supports patients on peritoneal dialysis, including CCPD. Dialysis is needed when kidneys lose most of their function (end-stage kidney disease), or temporarily in some cases of acute kidney injury, dangerous potassium levels, severe fluid overload or poisoning. Your nephrologist decides the right time to start.
In haemodialysis, blood flows from your body through a filter (dialyser) in a machine and back again. Most patients need about 3 sessions a week, each lasting around 4 hours.
When dialysis is needed urgently or a fistula is not ready, a soft tube (catheter) is placed in a large vein in the neck or groin under local anaesthetic. Longer-term tunnelled catheters are more comfortable and have lower infection risk. Keep the catheter dry and clean, and report fever or redness immediately.
Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of your tummy as a natural filter. A soft tube is placed in the tummy, and dialysis fluid is exchanged at home, either by hand several times a day (CAPD) or by a machine overnight (CCPD). It allows more freedom from hospital visits. Our nephrologists train and follow up patients. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: PD catheter insertion done at Apex and home training support]

A haemodialysis session usually takes about 4 hours, typically 3 times a week.
Dialysis itself is not painful. Some discomfort can occur when needles are placed in a fistula, and some people feel tired afterwards.
Peritoneal dialysis, including machine-based CCPD, is done at home after training. Haemodialysis is done in the hospital unit.
In acute kidney injury, kidney function sometimes recovers and dialysis can stop. In end-stage kidney disease, dialysis is usually lifelong unless a transplant is done.
