Apex Multispeciality Hospital : Kopar Khairane
A craniotomy is an operation in which a piece of the skull is temporarily removed to reach the brain, then replaced at the end. A craniectomy is similar, but the bone piece is not replaced straight away, to give a swollen brain room. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, neurosurgeons perform these operations for brain bleeding, injury, swelling and tumours, with ICU care afterwards.
Risks depend on the reason for surgery and include bleeding, infection, fits, brain swelling, stroke, and new weakness, speech or memory problems. After craniectomy, patients must protect the area until the bone is replaced. Your neurosurgeon will explain the expected benefits and risks.
Brain surgery at Apex is supported by Apex Hospital’s medical team, including:

In a craniotomy the skull bone is put back at the end of surgery. In a craniectomy it is left out for a time to allow the swollen brain room, and replaced later.
It depends on the reason, usually a few hours.
Often one to two weeks, including ICU time, but it varies with the condition.
Usually after several weeks to months, once the swelling has settled, in an operation called cranioplasty.
