Types of stroke

  • Ischaemic stroke: a clot blocks a blood vessel in the brain. This is the most common type.

  • TIA (mini-stroke): symptoms that go away within minutes or hours. It is a warning sign and still needs urgent assessment.

What happens at Apex

  1. Rapid assessment in the emergency department and a note of when symptoms started.
  2. Brain scan to tell whether the stroke is from a clot or bleeding. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: CT scan on site or immediate tie-up]
  3. Treatment based on the type of stroke, with blood pressure, sugar and oxygen control.
  4. Monitoring in the ICU for patients who need it.
  5. Early swallowing checks, prevention of complications and start of rehabilitation.

Clot-dissolving treatment for stroke

For some strokes caused by a clot, a clot-dissolving medicine (thrombolysis) can improve recovery if given within a few hours of symptoms starting, usually up to 4.5 hours, after a brain scan confirms there is no bleeding. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: whether Apex gives stroke thrombolysis. If not, replace with ‘the team arranges urgent transfer to a stroke centre’] Some patients may benefit from a procedure to remove the clot, which is done at specialised centres. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: referral pathway for thrombectomy]

Treatment for bleeding strokes

Bleeding strokes are treated by controlling blood pressure, reversing blood thinners and close monitoring. Some patients need surgery by our neurosurgeons to relieve pressure on the brain.

Recovery and rehabilitation

Recovery is often fastest in the first weeks and months. Physiotherapy, help with speech and swallowing, and support for daily activities help patients regain independence. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: physiotherapy and speech therapy available]

Preventing another stroke

  • Control blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol
  • Take blood thinners or other medicines exactly as prescribed
  • Stop smoking and limit alcohol
  • Stay active and eat a healthy diet
  • Get irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) checked. A Holter test may help
