Fracture Treatment & Surgery in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

A fracture is a broken bone. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, fractures are assessed 24/7 in the emergency department with X-rays and treated by orthopaedic surgeons, either with a plaster or splint, or with surgery using plates, screws or rods when the bone needs to be fixed in position.

Signs of a fracture

  • Pain that is worse when moving or pressing on the area
  • Swelling and bruising
  • A limb that looks bent, twisted or shorter
  • Not being able to move or put weight on the limb
  • A grating feeling or sound at the injury

First aid before reaching hospital

  • Keep the injured part still and supported. Do not try to straighten it.
  • Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth to reduce swelling
  • For bleeding wounds, press gently with a clean cloth
  • Do not give food or drink if surgery may be needed
  • If a neck or back injury is possible, do not move the person. Call 108.

How fractures are diagnosed

The doctor examines the injury and orders X-rays. For complex fractures, especially around joints, a CT scan may be needed. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: CT access]

Treatment options

  • Plaster cast or splint: for many stable fractures, holding the bone still while it heals
  • Closed reduction: setting the bone back in place without an operation, under pain relief or anaesthesia
  • Surgery (internal fixation): plates, screws, wires or rods inside the body to hold the bone in the correct position
  • External fixation: a frame outside the limb, often for severe open fractures
  • Joint replacement: for some hip fractures in older people. See hip replacement.

Open fractures

If the bone breaks through the skin, it is an open fracture. It needs urgent treatment in the operation theatre to clean the wound and prevent infection, followed by fixation of the bone.

Hip fractures in older people

A fall in an older person can break the hip, especially with weak bones (osteoporosis). Most hip fractures need surgery within a day or two so the person can get up and walk again quickly, which lowers the risk of complications. After recovery, a check for osteoporosis helps prevent further fractures.

Fractures in children

Children’s bones heal quickly and many fractures are treated with a plaster. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: whether Apex operates on children’s fractures, given the hospital does not offer specialist paediatric surgery]

Healing and recovery

Most fractures take about 6 to 12 weeks to heal, depending on the bone, the type of break, age and health. Follow-up X-rays check healing. Physiotherapy restores movement and strength. Rehabilitation is supported by the hospital’s physiotherapy team. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: physiotherapy available for inpatients and outpatients]

Risks and complications

Possible complications include delayed healing or the bone not joining, healing in the wrong position, infection (especially after open fractures or surgery), stiffness, and blood clots. Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes slow healing.
