Bronchoscopy in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

A bronchoscopy is a test in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through the nose or mouth into the airways so the doctor can see inside the lungs and take samples. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, bronchoscopy is performed by chest physicians under local anaesthetic spray and sedation, and usually takes 20 to 45 minutes.

Why is a bronchoscopy done?

  • A cough that has not improved, or coughing up blood
  • An abnormal chest X-ray or CT scan
  • To take samples for infection, including tuberculosis, when sputum tests are not enough
  • To check for a growth or narrowing in the airways and take a biopsy
  • To remove thick mucus plugs or an inhaled object [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: therapeutic bronchoscopy performed]

 How to prepare

  • Do not eat or drink for about 6 hours before the test [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: hospital fasting instructions]
  • Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners, diabetes medicines or have allergies. Do not stop medicines unless told to.
  • Bring your X-rays, CT scans and reports
  • Arrange for someone to take you home, as you will have had sedation

 What happens during the test

  1. Numbing spray is used on your nose and throat, and a sedative helps you relax.
  2. Oxygen is given and your oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure are monitored.
  3. The bronchoscope is gently passed into your airways. You can breathe normally around it.
  4. Samples may be taken, such as a wash of the airways (BAL), brushings or small biopsies.

 After the test

  • You rest for 1 to 2 hours while the sedation wears off
  • Do not eat or drink until the numbness in your throat has gone, to avoid choking
  • A sore throat, hoarse voice or slightly blood-streaked sputum is common for a day
  • Do not drive for the rest of the day

Risks of bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy is generally safe. Possible risks include a fall in oxygen level, a fever the same day, minor bleeding after biopsy and, rarely, a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) or serious bleeding. The team monitors you closely and is trained to manage these problems.

After a bronchoscopy, seek help urgently if you cough up more than a small amount of blood, have chest pain or worsening breathlessness. Call +91 85912 35064 or come to the 24/7 Emergency department.
