Apex Multispeciality Hospital : Kopar Khairane
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or on the womb. Many cause no trouble, but some cause heavy periods, pain or pressure. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, gynaecologists treat fibroids with medicines, myomectomy (removing only the fibroids so the womb is kept) or, when appropriate, hysterectomy.
Fibroids are growths of muscle tissue in the womb. They are very common, especially between the ages of 30 and 50, and are almost always non-cancerous. They can be tiny or grow large, and there may be one or many.
Your gynaecologist examines you and usually arranges a pelvic ultrasound. Blood tests check for anaemia. Occasionally further imaging is needed.
Recovery depends on the type of surgery. After hysteroscopic surgery, most women go home the same or next day. After laparoscopic surgery, light activities usually resume in 2 to 3 weeks. After open surgery, allow about 4 to 6 weeks.
Possible risks include bleeding (sometimes needing a blood transfusion), infection and scar tissue. New fibroids can grow after myomectomy. If a deep fibroid was removed, your doctor may advise a caesarean in a future pregnancy. Rarely, a myomectomy has to become a hysterectomy during surgery because of bleeding. This will be discussed with you before consent.
