Caesarean Section (C-Section) in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

A caesarean section (C-section) is an operation to deliver a baby through a cut in the mother’s tummy and womb. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, obstetricians perform both planned and emergency caesareans, usually under spinal anaesthesia so the mother stays awake, with an ICU in the same hospital if extra care is needed.

Planned and emergency caesareans

A planned (elective) caesarean is arranged before labour starts, usually close to the due date. An emergency caesarean is done when a problem appears during pregnancy or labour and it is safer to deliver quickly.

Why might a C-section be recommended?

  • The baby is lying bottom-first (breech) or sideways
  • The placenta is low and covering the neck of the womb (placenta praevia)
  • Labour is not progressing
  • The baby’s heart rate shows signs of distress
  • Twins or more, depending on their position
  • Some previous caesareans or womb surgery
  • Health conditions in the mother, such as severe high blood pressure in pregnancy

How a caesarean is done

  1. Most caesareans are done under spinal anaesthesia, which numbs you from the chest down while you stay awake. General anaesthesia is used in some emergencies.
  2. The operation. A cut is usually made low across the tummy, just above the bikini line. The baby is delivered within a few minutes of the start.
  3. Placenta and closure. The placenta is removed and the womb and skin are stitched.

The whole operation usually takes about 40 to 60 minutes.

Recovery after a C-section

  • You will be helped to sit up and walk within a day, which lowers the risk of blood clots
  • Most mothers stay in hospital for about 3 to 4 days [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: usual stay]
  • Pain relief is given as needed, and breastfeeding can start soon after the birth
  • Keep the wound clean and dry and watch for redness, discharge or fever
  • Avoid heavy lifting and driving for a few weeks, as advised by your doctor
  • Full recovery usually takes about 6 weeks

Risks of a caesarean section

A caesarean is a common and generally safe operation, but it is major surgery. Possible risks include wound infection, heavier bleeding, blood clots in the legs or lungs, and, rarely, injury to the bladder or bowel. For future pregnancies, a caesarean scar slightly increases the risk of placenta problems and, rarely, a tear in the scar during labour.

Pregnancy after a C-section

Doctors usually advise waiting before the next pregnancy so the womb can heal. In your next pregnancy, your obstetrician will discuss whether a repeat caesarean or a vaginal birth is right for you. If you do not want more children, tubal ligation can sometimes be done during the caesarean. Discuss this well in advance.
