Normal Delivery in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai

A normal delivery (vaginal birth) is when a baby is born through the birth canal without surgery. At Apex Multispeciality Hospital, Kopar Khairane, obstetricians support women through labour with monitoring of mother and baby, pain relief options including epidural (painless delivery), and a caesarean section team ready if it becomes safer.

Who can plan a normal delivery?

Most women with a healthy pregnancy can aim for a normal delivery. Your obstetrician will usually recommend it when:

  • The pregnancy is progressing well with no major complications
  • The baby is lying head-down near the due date
  • The placenta is not covering the neck of the womb
  • There is no medical reason that makes labour unsafe for you or the baby

If you have had a caesarean before, a vaginal birth may still be possible in some cases. Discuss this early with your doctor. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: whether Apex offers VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean)]

Preparing for a normal delivery

  • Attend all antenatal check-ups and complete the recommended blood tests and scans
  • Stay active with walking and doctor-approved exercise
  • Discuss your wishes on pain relief with your obstetrician in advance
  • Keep a hospital bag ready from 36 weeks, with your reports, ID and insurance documents

Signs that labour has started

  • Regular, painful tightening of the tummy that gets stronger and closer together
  • Your waters break (a gush or trickle of fluid)
  • A sticky, pink or blood-streaked discharge (a ‘show’)
  • Lower back ache that comes and goes

Come to the hospital when contractions are regular and strong, when your waters break, or any time you are worried.

Come to hospital straight away in pregnancy if you have heavy vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, a fit, a severe headache with blurred vision, leaking fluid from the vagina, or your baby is moving less than usual. Call +91 85912 35064 or dial 108, or come to the 24/7 Emergency department. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: obstetrician available 24×7 for labour and pregnancy emergencies]

What happens during labour

  1. First stage. Contractions gradually open the neck of the womb (cervix). This is usually the longest stage, especially in a first pregnancy.
  2. Second stage. Once the cervix is fully open, you push with the contractions and your baby is born.
  3. Third stage. The placenta is delivered, usually within 30 minutes of birth.

Throughout labour, the team checks your blood pressure, the progress of labour and your baby’s heartbeat. A small cut (episiotomy) is made only if needed to help the baby out safely.

Pain relief during labour

Breathing techniques, movement and support help many women cope. If you want stronger relief, an epidural for painless delivery can be given by an anaesthetist.

When a normal delivery changes to a C-section

Sometimes a caesarean becomes the safer choice during labour, for example if labour stops progressing, the baby shows signs of distress, or there is heavy bleeding. The team will explain why before going ahead. Read more about caesarean section.

After the birth

  • Skin-to-skin contact and early breastfeeding are encouraged when mother and baby are well
  • Your baby is examined soon after birth [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: newborn examination by a paediatrician]
  • Most mothers stay in hospital for about 1 to 2 days [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: usual stay]
  • A follow-up check is usually planned about 6 weeks after delivery

Risks of a normal delivery

A normal delivery is generally the safest route for a healthy pregnancy, but it can involve tears in the vaginal area, heavier bleeding after birth, or the need for help with forceps or vacuum. Rarely, serious complications occur. The obstetric team monitors closely so problems are found and treated early.

Please note: sex determination of the unborn baby is prohibited by law in India under the PCPNDT Act, 1994. Apex Hospital does not reveal the sex of the baby under any circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a normal delivery take?

Labour in a first pregnancy often lasts 12 to 18 hours or more from the start of regular contractions. Later labours are usually shorter. Every labour is different.

Can I have a normal delivery after a C-section?

Sometimes. It depends on the reason for the earlier caesarean and your current pregnancy. Discuss it early with your obstetrician.

Is painless delivery possible with a normal delivery?

Yes. An epidural can reduce labour pain a great deal while you still deliver normally. It may not take away all sensation.

How many days will I stay in hospital after a normal delivery?

Most mothers go home after about 1 to 2 days if mother and baby are well.

What is the cost of a normal delivery at Apex Hospital?

Please call +91 85912 35064 for current package details. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: publish normal delivery package price in Rs if the hospital agrees]

Can my husband stay with me during labour?

Please ask the team about the labour room companion policy when you book. [HOSPITAL TO VERIFY: birth companion policy]
