What is thrombolysis?
Most heart attacks happen when a blood clot suddenly blocks a coronary artery. Thrombolysis is a medicine given into a vein that dissolves the clot and can restore blood flow to the heart. It works best when given as early as possible after symptoms start, which is why coming to hospital quickly matters so much.
Thrombolysis is not suitable for everyone. The doctor checks for reasons it could be unsafe, such as recent bleeding, a recent stroke or head injury, recent major surgery, or very high blood pressure, before giving it.
Risks of thrombolysis
Because it breaks down clots, thrombolysis increases the risk of bleeding.
