What is a 2D echo test?

How is a 2D echo done?
- You change into a gown open at the front and lie on your left side.
- Small sticky patches are placed on your chest to track your heart rate.
- Gel is applied, and the technician or doctor moves the probe over your chest.
- You may be asked to breathe slowly or hold your breath for a few seconds.
- The gel is wiped off and you can go home straight away.
A female chaperone can be present if you wish. Just ask the staff.
How to prepare
- No fasting is usually needed for a standard 2D echo. Take your regular medicines unless told otherwise.
- Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to undress above the waist.
- Bring earlier echo reports, ECGs and your doctor’s prescription.

Is a 2D echo safe? Risks and limitations
A standard 2D echo is very safe. There is no radiation and no needle. The gel can feel cold, and the probe pressure may be slightly uncomfortable.
The test has limits. Image quality can be reduced by body size, lung disease or chest shape. A normal echo does not rule out blocked heart arteries, because the heart may look normal at rest. If this is a concern, your doctor may suggest a TMT stress test or other tests.
